  5. Resolved Question: strict parents?
  6. 30 May 2008 at 11:35am
i'm a 21 year old female who is a junior in college, i still live at home with my parents, i have no job, but the problem is, i'm wanting to move out of their house and into a dorm, i have the money for the dorm but they are really upset with me for even considering the idea of moving out of their home, i am their baby girl. With gas at 4 19 a gallon and me living 54 miles one way from the university i think its better than staying here and putting that many miles on the car, but that wouldn't happen either, because my dad won't let me drive that far by myself. No i'm not handicapped nor have seizures or anything, he is just over protective and i am tired of it. I want to go experiece the college life for myself, it isn't like i'm moving for good, i'd be back for a visit here and there, but i'm just need to go to finish my school.... what do you guys think??

  12. 30 May 2008 at 10:46am
I heard that the standard of testing/examination at US universities/colleges is much less than in the UK ie some of your exam papers are just multiple choice questions as opposed to more detailed essay style analysis questions? Wow I can't believe it! Do you really think that multiple choice is the best way to show evidence of learning? I mean by pot luck alone and with the laws of probability you could probably pass a paper not having studied at all!

  15. Resolved Question: Questions about Colleges or universitys in Florida.?
  16. 30 May 2008 at 10:00am
My friend, who I care for a lot, is planning on attending college. He really didn't want to in the beginning, he was planning on sticking to a job after highschool, but then I told him of why he should, hes really interested, and he really wants to go to college he is very determined to get into a college , but his grades aren't too great he has a 2.8 as a junior, but he is going to be taking honors classes next year and might even try some online classes. We are going to make sure we attempt to complete some community service hours this summer, and we are both going to get tutored for both the ACT AND SAT. I'm a sophmore by the way. Is there any way he can get into a 4 yr college, or university in Florida? He is very good at math, and not too great with Reading or writting. If he passes his test with flying colors with this make it better and also, do you think it would be best for him to try a 2 year college and then transfer? I forgot to mention, he has been on the soccer team for the past three years, and is in SGA. Does that help? He really is a good guy.

  19. Voting Question: Pregnant and confused. I need advice!!!?
  20. 30 May 2008 at 9:54am
I'm 8 weeks pregnant and 23 years old. I'm about to finish my last year in University and planned to go to teachers college in Australia for 6 months. My boyfriend of almost two years and I are spending the summer in Europe. I just found out I'm pregnant. I'm happy and not soo happy at the same time. We though he couldn't have kids because of a complication when he was younger. And now we're expecting. We've told our moms and they are supportive regardless of our choices (although they think we have too much going for us). He just started University and is on a good track. We love each other beyond anything and were planning to move in after the summer. He's really excited and wants the baby, but he's a dreamer, unrealistic. I see the work and responsibility and feel we can wait another 2-3 years. But I wanna do the right thing. I wanna finish school and get my career. He has to finish school to take over his dad's business. Any advice? Similar situations?

  24. 30 May 2008 at 9:05am
I graduated from high school a little over a year ago. I have been trying to get a job, and for a little while i was babysitting. I was going to wait until i had enough money for a community college, seeing as it would be easier to go there before going to a university. My question is, should i just go ahead and apply to hcc? In which case, i need to hurry up and get my transcripts before school ends. Or should wait another year, and apply then? And what do i do about money? Tuition is like $3000, and i don't have job. I know, get a job. I've been trying. But when you live in a city like Tampa, it's hard as hell.

  27. Resolved Question: Can a gap in education be turned into an advantage?
  28. 30 May 2008 at 8:17am
After high school I graduated with an Associates from a community college and then went to The Philippines to volunteer and teach English. I did this for four years. Now I'm going back to the United States and realize that I can wrap up a few more units and then transfer (either into UC or CSU) but I'm a bit worried about the gap. Are my chances in a university hampered by my education gap?

  33. Resolved Question: How important is the college you attend?
  34. 30 May 2008 at 6:35am
I want to be an orthodontist and im debating between school choices right now. I have a 4.0 so i should be able to get into a pretty good school, such as University of Michigan. However, I could probably get more scholorship money for a smaller school, such as Grand Valley State University, and I like the idea of smaller classes, etc. How important is it that I go to a large and prestigious school over a smaller university?

  38. 30 May 2008 at 4:21am
We are both currently in community college and are going to University as soon as we finish up. The thing is.... We live in a dirty crappy 'ghetto' city and I don't like it here. I want to (and have wanted to for the past 6 years to) move to this better cleaner nicer smaller town that I have been to many times. It's about 450 miles away from where we currently live. I also wanted to go to school there - they are a FAR better university with full on programs of study directly for what me and my fiance plan on studying. BUT.... he wants to stay here. He says he does want to move up there for school because of the specialized programs, but then move back down here. In most disagreement situations you can compromise, ya know. But that's not possible with this. ....What can we do? I want more than anything to live there, and he really wants to live here. I can't stand this place. He loves it. =(

  43. Resolved Question: Help! Not sure which I should do- Army look!?
  44. 30 May 2008 at 3:01am
Hey I still cannot decide if I want stick wtih just AROTC and become commissioned that way, or go through the National Guard SMP program. Can anyone help me with the pros and cons. I have thought about this alot and really would like some advice from people who know more about it then I do. I would like to go into Aviation, Military Intelligence or Infantry. Also, I would WANT to go Active Duty after college, not stay in the NG. I am also a Junior @ a four year university double majoring which means I might be out in two years or it might take a little longer to get both my majors complete. So 2.5 years. School is number one priority to me. I do not want SMP to get in the way of school, and that is what I see is the biggest con. Basic + AIT could take forever and I could miss a lot of school. That is just some basic information if it matters at all. But please help me with what you know about the SMP program and/or just sticking with AROTC. Yeah, it seems like ROTC is the best decision for me, however, I feel that going through Basic and AIT like the rest will help me a lot in the long run as an officer which is the only reason I really am looking into SMP.

  48. 30 May 2008 at 2:00am
say a 20 yr. old woman got pregnant by a college coach,at the same university they were attending college. The woman was trying to please her father by going to college, focusing on a career her Father picked out for her. While in school she gets pregnant, gives her baby up for adoption. 25 yrs. pass, later she "blames it all on her Mother" saying her Mother 'made her' put the child up for adoption. Would you believe this? [after all,she was a 20 yr. old woman, not like 15 or so.] sounds like bull to me.

  57. Resolved Question: This Is Kind of Cool, Isn't It?
  58. 30 May 2008 at 1:02am
I'm in college and on the university's website, you can search for courses that are being offered and whatnot. However, i just discovered that anyone who is a student or a professor can go look at every class that was offered every semester between Fall of 1921 to Fall of 2008. It even give a description of what the course was about. I went back to 1958 and found a course called "Stalin and Stalinism" and several other history classes about Russia. A history class in 1965 called "American History to 1960". One class in 1976 called "The African-American Since 1865". A math class in 1960 called "The Uses of Technology and Mathmatics". An Art class in 1958 discussing the future possibly of the use of computers in art.

I had three classes this last quarter...AP Biology, Physics, and AP English. This last quarter i messed up and i got a D in AP Biology, a Pass in physics (i took it pass/fail, and a D in AP English will the University of Illinois at Chicago deny me?? I was admitted into the Applied Health Sciences school. Is there anything i can do??? FYI, I'm taking summer school at a community college to get ahead. I just finished my Anthropology class and i believe i got an A. Now i am taking English 102 (because i was granted credit for english 101 because of my ACT) and Psychology 101. I plan to do well in these as well. So basically i just messed up in my AP English and Bio class. English doesnt matter because i'll be done with it for the rest of my life once i'm done with it this summer. However do they look at it the same way?? How can i prove to them that i am doing well in these college classes and that i am going above and beyond most kids in the summer and doing a total of 12 credit hour After my psych and english class finish i'm also taking a history class. By then it will be fall and hopefully time for UIC????

I'm taking 6 community college classes this fall, including Philosophy, Sociology, Administration to Justice, Math, English, and Journalism. I really have to take all of them because I want to transfer to another university in 2010 and I want to relax in spring 2010 and not worry about taking a ton of classes last minute. 75. Voting Question: What university would be good for me?
  76. 29 May 2008 at 11:08pm
I have always wanted to be a writer. I am finishing my sophomore year in high school and last year I didn't get a great GPA, but this year is helping and I still have 2 years and lots of AP classes to bring it up. My counselor told me to look into colleges and I guess I really wanted to know what the best school for writing was? And, what schools could I get into if my grades don't make the cut? BTW, I live in California, but I don't necessarily have to go to school here, but I like it... so, yeah.

  79. Voting Question: What should I do about my relationship?
  80. 29 May 2008 at 10:42pm
OKAY, PLEASE EXCUSE THAT I LIKE TO TYPE IN CAPS... WELL, ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND ARE HAVING PROBLEMS. WE'VE BEEN GOING OUT FOR A LITTLE OVER TWO YEARS. I'M THREE YEARS OLDER THAN HER. THE PROBLEM IS THIS. SHE DOESN'T WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE RIGHT AWAY. TO ME, I DON'T WANT TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE THAT DOESN'T WANT TO GO TO A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE. SHE SAID THAT SHE'D GO WITHIN FOUR YEARS. SHE SAID THAT SHE WANTS TO GO TO WORK FULL TIME OR GO TO BEAUTY SCHOOL AND THAT A NORMAL UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE IS NOT FOR HER. I BELIEVE IN STATISTICS AND I BASE MANY THINGS ON IT AS I AM MINORING IN SOCIOLOGY. I TOLD HER THAT PEOPLE THAT DON'T GO TO COLLEGE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL OR END UP GETTING A FULL TIME JOB USUALLY NEVER GO TO COLLEGE OR THEY DO GO BACK BUT NEVER GET THEIR ASSOCIATE'S OR BACHELOR'S. I BELIEVE THAT EDUCATION IS THAT IMPORTANT FOR FINANCIAL SECURITY AND SELF BENEFIT. I BELIEVE THAT SACRIFICING THIS RELATIONSHIP WILL BENEFIT ME IN THE FUTURE. AM I RIGHT OR WRONG? WHAT DO I DO?

  81. Resolved Question: How can an elite Kenyan runner/exchange student pay tuition?
  82. 29 May 2008 at 9:47pm
I coach at a Community College in Washington State. An elite 19 year old Kenyan distance runner wants to move to the area due to family ties, but they cannot support him financially. He has been accepted to the school has a host family and wants to run for the team. By rule I cannot help him with tuition. He has no job in Kenya and political unrest has prevented his family from paying his tuition. How/where can he find financial assistance so that he can move to the United States and run collegiately ... eventually moving onto a four year University and continuing his running to an even higher level. Guy runs a 14:30 5k. I'd like to give him some advice on how to find the $3000 per quarter that he needs to go to school. When he gets here he's limited to working 16 hours a week at an on-campus job so that's not going to pay all of his tuition and books through the year. I hate to tell this kid that he's not going to be able to go to college. Any advice on what to tell him? A good website about the visa and good advice. Thank you. He should be able to get a student visa as his uncle is willing to back him financially in the visa application process and he has found himself a host family that is providing room and board. His uncle was going to help him with tuition, but the political unrest in the country after the general election has caused his financial situation to worsen to the point that he won't have money to spare on his nephew's tuition, but does have sufficient funds to get the kid through the visa application process. Unfortunately, I think this kid may just be a victim of the times ... and while a very good runner, he is not going to make money as a runner within Kenya since he does not compare to their sub 13:45 5k times ... moreover, taking money for running would prevent him from running collegiately in the future and limit his chances at a college education; it will ruin his amateur status.

So here is basically everything about my high school career. GPA: 94 unweighted which is a 3.8-3.9 on the 4.0 scale SAT: Only taken them once: 2400 scale: 1850, 1600 scale: 1210, 640 writing 640 reading 570 math, am going to take them again in june, and SAT II's I did poorly 560 in English Literature and 600 in US Hist but I will probably take them again in october. AP Classes Taken or will take: 5- US Hist, Bio, Euro Hist, Physics, English. Activities: 4 years of tennis, 4 years of golf, 2 years Spanish Club, 2 years of Pennserve(volunteer work) Programs: Spoke at The Wall in DC representing my school on Veteran's Day, attending a medical program in Boston this summer for 10 days, and a Pre Calculus program at my local college for 4 credits. Language: 4 years of Spanish Rank: top 10th percentile So if there is anything i need to improve on other than SAT's obviously, let me know please. Are there any other colleges you would suggest?
