    pBeach House's autumnal, Baltimore dream-pop wooed and wowed a href="/archives/concert/stereogum-does-cmj-beach-house-cake-shop.html"at CMJ '06/a, delivering a spellbinding set at Cake Shop that landed in our a href="/archives/concert/stereogums-favorite-live-shows-of-the-year.html"top five/a for the year, setting the stage for this year's small-scale victory lap -- performing festivals and tinier rooms and keeping the BPM on that low-grade drum machine at a very, slow, clip. /ppSo, follow-up time. As engrossing as emBeach House/em could be, Victoria and Alex weren't pushing far beyond the Mazzy, the shooting-star slide guitars, the woozily reverbed House halls. "Gila" comes as the first bow from emDevotion/em, the band's forthcoming, second outing, picking up right where they left off -- "Saltwater"/"Tokyo Witch" drum machine click-off, nocturnal organ swoons, Victoria's distant intoning. But "Gila" builds, and it's not just rehashed hash-pipes, here; where emBeach House/em was willfully scraggly, now it's the same affecting sound but richer, thanks mostly to a slow wall of Legrand harmonies. For the most part, you want to see every single artist, but realistically that is never a possibility. It was the perfect set for me to chill out, enjoy an ice cold beer, and just enjoy the moment.   17. Review: Grizzly Bear @ The Pabst

    pTough call last night choosing a href="http://www.grizzly-bear.net/"Grizzly Bear/a at a href="http://www.pabsttheater.org/"the Pabst/a over a href="http://www.wilcoworld.net"Wilco/a at a href="http://www.therave.com"the Rave/a. Jeff Tweedy can hopefully forgive, considering a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/22/arts/music/22play.html?_r=1#038;ref=arts#038; oref=slogin"told the New York Times/a, #8220;They make really beautiful, evocative music that has a gauzy fuzziness to it; you can’t accurately pinpoint their place in time.#8221; Honestly, it was the venue that made the decision for us. Plus, Grizzly Bear have won me over after some reluctance on my part when I first heard emstrongYellow House/strong/em./p pGrizzly Bear a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2007/07/15/grizzly-bear-at-pitchfork-music-festival /"won us over/a in a big way at the a href="http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com"Pitchfork Music Festival/a, and have matured and grown into a lovely live band since first seeing them open for a href="http://www.muzzleofbees.com/2006/10/10/i-was-a-lover-before-this-war/"TV On The Radio at the Metro/a a year ago. I have to say that, great as their Pitchfork set was, seeing them in a Theater really suits their sound and performances best in my opinion./p pWith the upcoming release of the emstrongFriend EP/strong/em next month, the band has been hard at work developing #8220;alternate interpretations of songs,#8221; which was clearly evident from their performance last night. Virtually every song from emstrongYellow House/strong/em was affectionately tailored for the live setting allowing the songs to absorb the crowd while maintaining an interesting balance of familiarity with a twist of new direction./p pTheir a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He_Hit_Me_(And_It_Felt_Like_a_Kiss)"cover of/a #8220;He Hit Me (If Felt Like A Kiss)#8221; sounded simply amazing, look for the studio version of that to appear on the aforementioned EP. The band sprinkled their biggest hit #8220;Knife#8221; into the set list early, it was beautiful and moving (a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU0uP6tAg00"like this/a), and certainly well-known by those in attendance. One thing that stands out each time I see this band is how breathtaking their harmonies are. It#8217;s evident on their albums, but explodes in concert, making it easy for me to get lost within the music as I try to pick out each person#8217;s vocal duties. /p pI missed Jeff Tweedy perform #8220;Someone Else#8217;s Song#8221; acoustic and without microphone last night across town during one of Wilco#8217;s encores. Would that have been nice to see?     pspan class=mp3Hard to believe that I've never done a bHanoi Rocks/b post in the (almost) five years I've been doing this site. It's ridiculous, though I must admit I'm barely a casual fan. Like most folks, I first heard of the band via bGuns n' Roses/b who cited them as huge influence. They didn't make much of an impression at that time, but having revisited them since, I've discovered quite a bit more to like and i"Malibu Beach nightmare"/i definitely ranks way up there. Coming off of i"Strange boys play weird openings"/i from the i"Back to Mystery City"/i album, this is an awesome way to kick things off in a big way. You get bits of the bRamones/b (that beat!) and the bSex Pistols/b (that riff!) as well as plenty of good old-fashioned rock'n'roll. A bMichael Monroe/b sax solo? Why not! This is perfect Friday party music./span

I've met somebody who's doing just that.
